North Center’s history begun in late 1900’s where the area started populating with mostly German nationals, who, at the beginning of 20th century, worked at so called “industrial corridor” (Ravenswood Ave.) and at the West section of the Chicago River’s industrial plants.
Over the decades it was flooded with, and culturally influenced by, people arriving from many European countries. When exploring local structures, you’ll find examples of German, Polish, Czech, Serbian, Greek, Romanian, Croatian, and French architecture, dating the end of 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
Its borders defined on the North by Montrose Ave., Diversey Pkwy. on the South, Chicago River along the West, and Ravenswood Ave. on the East, are also encompassing 4 sub-neighborhoods:
- North Center (Northcenter), is an exciting community with wide-ranging mix of shopping places, cafeterias, eateries, bars with live music, and also a home to a few of the best Chicago public schools, i.e. Lane Tech High School and Coonley & Bell Elementary.
- Roscoe Village – an area with “virtual borders”, nowhere to be found on maps, and only distinguished by locals as Addison Str. – Belmont Ave. – Ravenswood Ave. – Chicago River.
- St. Ben’s neighborhood named after Saint Benedict’s Parish
- Hamlin Park with a park bearing the same name.
