Lakeview ( 60613, 60614, 60657 zip codes), community area of Chicago, one of the top Best Places to Live (according to Money Magazine), is located on the North side and defined by West Diversey Parkway along its South border, West Irving Park Road along North, North Ravenswood Ave. on the West, and the Lake Michigan shore along the east. Lakeview’s approximate100K population makes it the largest of the Chicago community areas.
There are a few smaller neighborhoods within Lakeview (Lakeview East, Central, and West):
- Sheridan Station Corridor – home of the CTA’s Sheridan station
- North Halsted – catering to Chicago nightlife, features more than 60 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender bars, restaurants and nightclubs, also a home to Center on Halsted, an LGBT community center.
- Wrigleyville – home of the Chicago Cubs, a neighborhood featuring multi story masonry buildings, some with rooftop bleachers called Wrigley Rooftops. You can purchase seats on those rooftops and watch Chicago Cubs baseball games or any other events taking place on the stadium. Although you can expect to pay quite as lot for a ticket on top of one of those buildings, all can eat and drinking is usually included.
- Wrigley Plaza
- Boystown – famous for its large LGBT population, holds the pride parade each June.
The Lakeview area was used in early 1800’s as a camp and trail path for the 3 Native American tribes: Miami, Ottawa, and Winnebago. The early settlement begun in 1837 and continued to grow thanks to increased immigration of the European farming families that came from Germany, Luxembourg and Sweden.
The first Lakeview township election was held in 1857.
Between 1870 and 1887, township’s population exploded from 2,000 to 45,000 inhabitants. This growth created a need for access to public services, and in 1889 Chicago absorbed Lakeview to meet those demands.
From that year forward, Lakeview experienced a major real estate expansion, and over 40% of the buildings that are still standing, were constructed at that time.
