Potawatomi Indians were in today’s Glenview area until 1833, and after they left, first European settlers started arriving and building their new prosperous lives in Illinois. The Great Chicago Fire in 1871 created a need for lumber. to rebuild devastated city, as well as other materials and supplies, which resulted in a new railroad construction with a station right in the center of town. The new form of transportation opened many business opportunities for locals, such as delivering farming products to the city, and starting manufacturing businesses.

Growing community determined that it needs to establish some form of a local government, who would help to respond dynamically to their needs. The referendum the was going to make a decision about incorporating a village from two sections of the Northfield Township was held in 1898. Although the first attempt failed, the second one in 1899 was successful, and a village with approximately 351 residents was formed.

The first name it received was South Northfield, which morphed into North Branch, and Oak Glen in 1878. There were two other attempts to rename the village, Hutchings, and then Barr, which both failed as well. Finally, the village was named Glen View, and eventually Glenview.
Glenview Village is assembled from a few smaller neighborhoods, the oldest one “The Park” occupies an area just south of the center of the Village. It was designed and built by an architect Swan Nelson, one of the architects who worked on the Chicago’s Lincoln Park.

Another, substantial size neighborhood in Glenview is “The Glen”, a development that begun in 1999 occupies approximately 15% of the Village. There are new homes, businesses, entertainment amenities, sport / exercise areas and more, and lots of stores.
