Berwyn, a suburban city near Chicago, IL, was chartered as a city in 1908 after breaking off from Cicero Township. Before that happened, the area was crisscrossed by Native American trails. Its development, due to uninteresting appeal of a grassy swamp, was quite slow.

The purchase of this land area by Marshall Field, in 1879, sparked expansion, building of new homes, and the area’s first school in 1888. Around 1901, a train station was built and named “Berwyn” after a name of Philadelphia suburb. From that moment on, the station surrounding areas were referred to as Berwyn. By 1920’s, large portion of todays Berwyn was developed and the area was known as the fastest growing suburb.

It’s rigorous building codes helped in developing entire square blocks of single and two story of good quality brick bungalow buildings. The majority of them still stand today, and Berwyn is nationally recognized as an area with the most substantial assortment of Chicago-style bungalow structures.

Besides various sizes of bungalows dominating the city, there are also many duplexes and 3-unit buildings.
Today, Berwyn occupies a land area of 3.91 square miles and it shares its borders with Oak Park on the North, Cicero on the East, Stickney on the South, and 4 suburbs on the on the West: Forest Park, Riverside, North Riverside, and Lyons.

Although Berwyn is mostly residential, referred to as the “City of Homes”, there are plenty of businesses, retail shops, restaurants, music venues, bars, and clubs. If you want to get there by train, you have Metra, BNSF Railway, and Chicago L to choose from.

An interesting fact about Berwyn: if you’re looking to get your laundry done, Berwyn has the place to do it – one of the largest in the World laundromats covering 13.5K square feet of space. It is equipped with solar thermal system, a play area for kids, a bird sanctuary, TV screens, and the most fascinating part of it – 161 washers and 140 dryers!!!
